Answer: Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs. Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from injury. Aikido is often translated as “the way of unifying life energy” or as “the way of harmonious spirit”. According to the founder’s philosophy, the primary goal in the practice of aikido is to overcome oneself instead of cultivating violence or aggressiveness.
Answer: We have our Little Warriors class which starts at four years of age.
Answer: It depends on what your version of self defence is. At West Coast Aikido we have a holistic view of self defence. We are always working on developing our mind, body and spirit to be ready and able to deal with all types of attacks, whether they are physical, mental or verbal. Aikido not only teaches great character but builds self-confidence, which is your best form of self defence.
Answer: Yes. People of all ages from young children up to seniors practice aikido the world over. Some of the best exponents of the art are advanced in age. Aikido training can vary, from light and flowing technique to more hard and vigorous training depending on your level of fitness, age and ability. However, training in Aikido can be tailored to suit your age, physical abilities or work environment.
Answer: It depends upon your age, belt rank, personal responsibilities or other commitments. Usually at the beginner stages twice per week is more than enough however, as you progress through the ranks you should increase your training to three times per week. Some students practice more depending upon their goals.
Answer: Yes, they are. As a matter of fact, we have a wealth of experience amongst our core group of instructors, many having years of experience in other martial arts. All of our instructors have completed our In-House Instructor’s Course. They also carry a current approved Western Australia Working with Children’s Check.
Answer: Absolutely! The best way to see if you like something is to try it first. We are no different, in fact as a more private martial arts school, we prefer that you try a couple of classes first to see if it is a good fit for you or your child. We also like to make sure that you, or your child, fits in with us as a student. Just complete the enquiry form now and we can get started as soon as possible.
